Yawning Weddell Seal
Yawning Weddell Seal
Yawning Weddell Seal 1E4A0099
Rauer Islands, Prydz Bay, Antarctica
During a traverse across to the Rauer islands we passed this Weddell Seal lounging around on the sea ice. Weddell Seals are commonly found on the fast ice or in the waters that surround Antarctica. Weddell Seals can live further south than any other mammal as they are able to keep beathing holes open in the sea ice by rasping back and forward with their teeth. While it looks like the seal is ready to attack, it’s actually yawning. I still wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of this seal!
