McMurdo Sound, Transatlantic Mountains, Antarctica.
The most amazing scenic flight and an unforgettable experience, NYE 2005. Taking off from Melbourne at 6pm, destination Antarctica. Within 4 hours we were viewing icebergs in the ocean and shortly after seeing the icy continent. Spending 4 hours flying over Antarctica at approximately 10’000ft. This is the view over the transatlantic mountains across to McMurdo Sound with Mount Erebus and the Ross Sea in the distance. Only 1-2% of Antarctica is ice-free, the Transatlantic Mountains which separate East and West Antarctica, and the Vestfold Hills near Davis Station being the two main ice-free areas. I would recommend the 12-hour scenic flight for those first-time glimpses of Antarctica.
