Aurora Australis overlooking Prydz Bay, Davis Station, Antarctica. 6th June 2016.
The aurora is created by the suns electromagnetic waves interacting with the earth’s magnetosphere. These interactions cause atoms to be excited. Upon returning to their normal state, they release light photons relating to the type of atom and its height in the atmosphere. In this case, oxygen releases green light at approximately 200kms above the earth’s surface. The atmosphere protects us from the perils of the sun and the aurora is an amazing display of this.
1 of the lucky 13 winners of the Bureau of Meteorology weather calendar competition. Featured in the Australian Bureau of Meteorology weather calendar (January 2020).
