March of the penguins 1E4A1093

Prydz Bay, Davis Station, Antarctica

This group of Emperor penguins were in transit to Amada Bay where several thousand of them go to breed every year. This was my first experience seeing an Emperor Penguin. I didn’t really expect to see any in this part of Antarctica. Emperor Penguins waddle at a speed of approximately 2.5 kms/hr and would take around 34 days to reach Amanda Bay from Davis Station (80kms). Lucky for them, they can lay on their front and propel themselves with their feet to get there slightly quicker.
