Lemaire Channel, Antarctic Peninsula

The agility of the Gentoo Penguin is amazing. Standing at approximately 70-95cm they are the third largest of the penguins and can propel themselves through the water at speeds up to 35kms/hr. Weighing in at between 5-8kg their streamlined body and strong flippers gives them the impression to ‘fly’ albeit briefly when exiting the water at high speeds. This allows them to evade predators over other penguin species. Taken aboard the MS Expedition during a two-week expedition cruise down the Antarctic Peninsula from Ushuaia, Argentina.
