Deep Lake, Vestfold Hills, Antarctica
The name of this lake is a little deceiving, while not extremely deep, it is however 51m below sea level, making it the lowest accessible place on the Antarctic continent. This unique lake classed as hypersaline has a salinity value of 10 times more than the ocean. Even in the cold winter temperatures of around -35°c the lake never freezes due to the salt content. Water temperatures can reach -20°c during the winter months. The lake forms part of many research programs to understand its history when it formed approximately 3000-5000 years ago when the isostatic rebound of the continental crust caused the sea to retreat. Monthly lake height and temperature measurements are carried out as part of this research by expeditions at Davis Station.
