Unique Landscape & Astrophotography Workshop

After successful workshops in 2022 & 2023 I’m returning to Lake Tyrrell in 2025. The inspiration I found during my Photographer in Residence at the Skymirror gallery and the endless opportunities to photograph. I’d love to share some of my most favorite spots during any time of the day. I look forward to welcoming you and sharing my knowledge of photography and can’t wait to see my guests images that they take during the workshop.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is aimed to suit beginner to intermediate photographers who are keen to learn and capture unique landscape images and those seeking the milky way galactic core at its best in the dark night skies reflecting off Lake Tyrrell. Also those who like the smaller things, macro and wildlife photography, the options at Lake Tyrrell are endless.

About the workshop

  • Explore unique parts of Lake Tyrrell, Victoria’s largest salt lake, and surrounds.

  • Lean photography techniques including editing with Photoshop using a calibrated BenQ 27” Photography monitor

  • Capturing - Sunrise / Sunset / Astrophotography / Reflections / Wildlife

  • Learn how to design an image, from selecting a time of day/night to image composition

  • Learn how to use natural light, light painting and the exposure triangle

  • Learn how to use your own camera in manual mode – including one on one tutorial

  • Learn about colour profiles and how this affects images being printed

  • Photography styles may include landscape, astro, macro, wildlife

  • And during prime milky way season without distractions from the moon

Workshop Includes

  • Shared accommodation at luxurious Skymirror Villa or similar depending on availability.

  • 4 days of photographing and tutorial

  • Quick reference cheat sheets with camera settings specific to your camera

  • Use of star tracker for crisp milky way images

  • Morning, afternoon and night photography sessions, weather permitting

  • Use of head torch with red led for improved night vision

  • Breakfast - cooked by Sky Mirror Chef, and coffee made by the talented baristas, or similar depending on availability.

We will also explore the Skymirror gallery in depth and talk about other photographers photos and visit the new tourist visitor information center to learn some history about the lake.

Workshop Technical Discussions - but not limited to

Camera setup, Exposure, Camera modes and understanding your histogram, White Balance, Raw vs Jpeg, Manual focusing at night, Composition techniques and working with natural light, monitor calibration, location scouting and planning

What you need

  • Your own mode of transport – Car. Possible car sharing available where required. (No 4WD required)

  • Camera/Tripod/Extra Batteries

  • Waders or Gum boots

  • Jacket/Gloves/Beanie/umbrella in case of cold wet weather – We head out regardless of conditions. However, safety is paramount.

  • Recommended - Circular polarizer filter. ND filter.

  • Transport to or from Sea Lake, including transport during workshop.

  • Lunch and Dinner

Other information/terms and conditions

Full refund will be offered in regards to covid cancellations.

Some long walks up to around 2 hours in the water or longer may be taken. An easy pace will be set to ensure all guests remain as a group. Tuition will be delivered both indoors and outdoors.

Photography locations cannot be guaranteed during the workshop due to weather and track conditions, this will be assessed each day to ensure we have the best conditions to photograph our subject and guests advised when the best times we’ll be going out to photograph and where. Lake conditions will also play a factor in locations as when the lake is full some locations may be unreachable in gumboots.

Workshop schedule (3 night) - Subject to change for best photographing opportunities.

Day 1 - Arrive before 3pm. Meet and greet at 3pm, Introduction to workshop. Sunset or Evening photography session. (Night 1)

Day 2 – Breakfast 8am. We will explore the lake during the day and or sunrise/sunset/Astro photography. (Night 2)

Day 3 – Breakfast 8am. We will explore the lake during the day and or sunrise/sunset/Astro photography. (Night 3)

Day 4 – Breakfast 8am. We will explore the late for sunrise/early morning. Debrief/questions. Depart before 12 noon.

Note: Schedule will be decided the day before the workshop and schedule to change for best photography conditions and acknowledging sufficient rest periods.

About the Skymirror Villa Accommodation - note alternative accommodation options may be used depending on availability.

Fully equipped, spacious house in a premier location, and private.
Only 5 minutes from Lake Tyrrell, our house in Sea Lake is literally just a few steps from Cafes, Supermarket, Hotel and restaurant.
Ideal for families or a group of friends, the house is set back from the street in a private setting behind the Skymirror Photo Gallery. Relax in the luxuriously appointed house, or wind down outside with friends enjoying drinks and BBQ in the secluded patio and bar area.

(10 guests, 4 bedrooms, 8 beds, 2.5 bathrooms)

Depending on amount of guests (Maximum 9 guests) you may need to share a room with up to 2 other photographers. Bedroom 1 – 1 queen, 1 single. Bedroom 2 – 1 king bed. Bedroom 3 – 3 single beds. Bedroom 4 – 2 single beds. Care will be taken to evenly distribute guests in the rooms. You may be required to share with mixed genders or couples, please advise at time of booking if this is ok.
